Easy Tips for Healthy Holiday Skin

Holidays are almost here, and let's face it – it's easy to forget about our skin while we're busy soaking up the sun and enjoying the festivities.

The hustle and bustle of the season, combined with the unique demands of warmer weather, can take its toll on our skin's health.

But keeping your skin fresh and fab during the silly season doesn't have to be a chore.

While some are fairly obvious, here are a few easy ways to make sure your skin stays in tip-top condition and that you keep rocking that holiday glow right through the summer months.

Want healthy holiday skin? Here's 8 easy ways to keep your skin glowing this summer:

Hydration is numero uno

Any time of year, but especially during the holidays when it’s all go, go, go, it’s super important to pay a thought for our skin, which often bears the brunt of our busy-ness and inattention.

So how can you keep your skin hydrated when it’s the last thing on your mind?

Make it easy. Three steps is all it takes to make sure your skin gets the attention it needs.

First up, start with a powerful hydration serum, like our Everything Olive Intense Hydration Gel Serum, which draws on the power of hyaluronic acid to assist with moisture absorption and retention. It’s anti-wrinkle properties are a bonus too!

Secondly, it’s important to stay consistent with your moisturising routine.

Using our Everything Olive Intense Hydration Facial Cream - packed with aloe barbadensis leaf juice to make sure your skin stays soothed and supple – means you can simply apply and go.

And finally – keep your fluids up! Unfortunately we don’t mean indulging in an extra G&T or Christmas cocktail. Rather, make sure you get your 2 litres a day from healthy sources like water, milk, soup and juice.

Don’t skip the self-care.

We know, we know – taking care of yourself is difficult when there are so many other things to do this time of year.

Scrambling to finish that final project at work, juggling school holidays, last minute gift shopping, scheduling dinner parties and Christmas drinks, and trying to figure out what to get the step-aunty-in-law you drew as secret Santa (that won’t be thrown in the bin come Boxing Day).

It’s exhausting! And probably a little unrealistic to expect a full 90 minute workout and 10 hours sleep a night.

But anything you can do to lower those stress levels will not only help your mental load, it'll benefit your skin too!

That’s because stress is the culprit behind things like acne, eczema and inflammation – and no one needs to deal with those on Christmas day.

So it goes without saying that even a little self-care really can go a long way.

Taking a few minutes to do some deep breathing before you get out of bed, doing a short midday meditation or even going on a quick jog around the block before dinner can help make sure your skin (and your mind) stay healthy and happy – even when life’s hectic.

Remember the SPF.

Christmas in Australian means Summer is here. And while sun protection is important all year round, it’s even more so during the Christmas holiday season when most of us are likely out and about a fair bit more than usual.

So making sure your skin is protected from all those extra UVA & UVB rays is of utmost importance.

And when it comes to which sun protection is best for your skin, we always go the natural route.

Applying a layer of all-natural, chemical-free sunscreen makes sure your skin not only feels great, but ensures you’re ready to face whatever the day throws at you.

We love the Everything Olive Natural Sunscreen SPF 50+ Sunscreen because it’s 100% organic, 100% certified vegan, preservative-free and reef safe… plus, it absorbs quickly, leaves no greasy residue (and smells divine!)

The best bit? Natural sunscreen can be safely used for the whole family - kids included - so it’s a one-stop shop to get you out the door faster!

Indulge - but don’t go overboard.

The holiday season wouldn’t be complete without a few glasses of eggnog, some fruit mince pies, duck-fat fried potatoes and nanna’s amazing Christmas pudding (swimming in custard, of course).

And while all these things are nice, too much of them and your skin will start to lose its lustre.

That’s because they’re full of sugar and unhealthy fats that work together to aggravate acne, wreck your complexion and speed up wrinkles.

So counteract their effect by loading up the other side of your plate with lots of fruit, veggies and healthy fats so all the wonderful nutrients are there for your skin to draw on.

Think blueberries, broccoli, strawberries, avocado and sweet potato, alongside beans, almonds, lean meat and prawns.

Cleanse before bed.

Christmas parties, drinks with friends and late-night shopping all conspire against you when you’re home late and just want to fall into bed.

But leaving your makeup on overnight is a disaster for your skin. Clogged pores, inflammation and a dull complexion are just a few things that happen if you leave that layer on all night.

So it goes without saying that taking two minutes to remove your makeup is going to be the best gift ‘right now you’ can give ‘future you’.

A quick and easy solution? Oil cleanser.

Everything Olive’s Intense Hydration Cleansing Oil gently hydrates while it removes even the most stubborn makeup - including waterproof mascara and lipstick! – and leaves your skin looking radiant the next day.

Limit your alcohol.

This tip not only saves your skin, but often a lot of embarrassment at the work Christmas party, amirite?

While we’re not here to tell you to go cold-turkey on the champagne, it is a good idea to keep an eye on how much alcohol you’re drinking over the holidays.

Alcohol has a sneaky way of ruining skin because it’s dehydrating.

Undoing all your good work drinking 2 litres a day, it can make your skin appear dull, bloated and blotchy if you happen to go a bit overboard.

But rather than give it up altogether, there are a few ways your skin can happily co-exist with that Christmas martini.

Make sure you’re interspersing your drinks with water to help flush toxins through your system. Always eat before you head out so you’re not drinking on an empty stomach. And finally, choose your drinks wisely.

Not all beverages are created equal - opt for low sugar alternatives like gin & sugar-free tonic, vodka with soda water and lime or red wine that’s known for its antioxidant properties. Steer clear of beer or dark spirits, which contain more skin-hostile additives.

Get your zzz’s in.

Want to know one of the best ways to combat saggy, aging skin – especially under your eyes? Sleep.

But during the busy summer holidays, we tend to get a whole lot less of it. It’s tricky.

While seven to nine hours of sleep per night is what the experts recommend, if that’s unachievable, try and squeeze in a 20 minute siesta between activities, or schedule a morning or two a week where you can snooze a little longer.

Every extra minute of shut-eye you can get will help make sure your skin looks fresher, younger and more radiant.

And finally… keep it simple.

While it’s tempting to treat yourself with a new skincare product right before a Christmas get together, it’s often better to stick with what you know around this time of year.

Why? Because risking unexpected pimples, inflammation and irritation is bad enough when you’re tucked away in the office or at home over winter, let alone right before you have a social chinwag with your new boss or that friend you haven’t seen in ages.

So while it’s exciting to try a something new, keeping your skincare routine consistent across the holidays is probably a wise move if you want your skin to stay looking its best.

Cleanser, serum, moisturiser and sunscreen … simple!
